About us

A small crew that treats your house like a house.

Bramblewick started in 2011 with one finish carpenter, one van and a lot of calls for jobs that were too small for the contractors he'd worked for. Fifteen years on, there are five of us, and the jobs are still mostly small. That's the point.

What we care about

Showing up is half the job.

Ask anyone who's tried to book a handyman, and the complaint is rarely the work. It's the no-show, the quote that never came, the half-finished job. So we built the business around the boring parts: answering the phone, sending the quote when we said, texting before we arrive, and finishing what we start.

The other half is the work itself. We're carpenters first, so we notice the gap at the mitre and the paint line that wanders. We'd rather take an extra 20 minutes than leave something we'd have to explain.

  • Same crew from estimate to finish on bigger jobs
  • Photos before and after every job, sent with the invoice
  • A real person answers the phone during work hours

The crew

Five people, each with a specialty.

Everyone can handle a general list. When a job leans one way, we send the person who's best at it.

Owner · estimates

Owen

Finish carpenter for twenty years before starting Bramblewick. Does most estimates himself and still picks up a mitre saw most weeks.

Lead carpenter

Marisol

Trim, stairs and built-ins. If your house has a curved wall or nothing is square, she's the one we send.

Drywall and paint

Dev

Patches you can't find afterwards. Also the crew's best colour-matcher, with a fan deck in every van.

Installs and repairs

Theo

TVs, shelving, blinds and the long list of small repairs. Knows which anchor goes in which wall without looking.

Outdoor work

Jess

Decks, fences and gates from April to November; seasonal maintenance visits the rest of the year.

Office

Bookings

Calls and emails are answered from the shop, Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 5 pm. Messages after hours are returned the next business morning.

How a visit goes

A job day, hour by hour.

Here is what to expect on the day, using a typical half-day visit as the example.

A hammer, pliers, a screwdriver and a tape measure laid out on weathered wooden boards
  1. Day before

    A reminder

A text or email confirming the time window, who's coming and what's on the list.

  2. 8:00 am

    On the way

A text when we're about 30 minutes out, with the name of the person coming.

  3. 8:30 am

    Walk the list

We go through the jobs with you, agree the order, and point out anything that looks different from the photos.

  4. 8:45 am

    Set up clean

Drop cloths down, boot covers on, a dust sheet or extractor where we're sanding or cutting.

  5. Through the morning

    The work

You don't need to stay home the whole time. If something unexpected comes up, we call before we change anything.

  6. 12:15 pm

    Tidy and walk-through

Swept, vacuumed, offcuts gone. We show you each job and you tell us if anything isn't right.

  7. Same evening

    Invoice and photos

Hours, materials with receipts, and before-and-after photos, by email.

Paperwork

Insured, registered and on the record.

Liability insurance

$5 million commercial general liability. We'll email a certificate before the job if you or your condo board need one.

WSIB coverage

Everyone on the crew is covered by WSIB, so if someone is hurt on your property, it's not your problem or your home insurer's.

Written quotes and invoices

Every quote and invoice carries our business number and HST number, and lists labour and materials separately.
