Patios
A patio is mostly what you don't see.
The stone on top is the part you choose. The 30 centimetres underneath decide whether it stays flat through Okanagan winters. We take both seriously.
Choosing the surface
Pavers or natural stone?
Both last decades when the base is right. The difference is in how they look, how they wear and what they cost to lay.
Concrete pavers
Interlock and large-format slabs. Uniform sizes, so they lay fast and sit tight. Colour goes all the way through on good brands.
- Look
- Crisp and even; many colours and textures
- Joints
- Narrow, filled with polymeric sand
- Repairs
- Lift and reset single pieces
- Best for
- Larger patios, driveways, modern houses
Natural stone
Flagstone, granite and sandstone. Every piece is cut and fitted by hand, which is where both the character and the cost come from.
- Look
- Varied, warm, gets better with age
- Joints
- Wider; sand, fines or mortar
- Repairs
- Harder to match later; we leave you spares
- Best for
- Garden terraces, step landings, character homes
Base prep
Built for frost, not for the first summer.
Kelowna clay holds water and heaves when it freezes. A thin base looks fine for a year, then the corners drop. Every patio we build has:
- Pavers 60 to 80 mm thick, set tight and locked with polymeric sand.
- A 25 mm screeded bed of washed sand.
- 200 to 300 mm of crushed gravel, compacted in 50 mm lifts with a plate compactor.
- Geotextile fabric where the soil is clay, so the gravel doesn't sink into it.
- Undisturbed or compacted subgrade, dug below the topsoil and roots.
The whole surface falls 2% away from the house, and every edge is held by a buried restraint.
Prices
What a patio costs in Kelowna.
Installed prices per square foot, including excavation, base, edging and clean-up. Your plan comes with an exact figure.
| Surface | Per sq ft | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Standard concrete interlock | $26–$36 | Most colours in stock locally. The good option in most of our quotes. |
| Large-format slab pavers | $34–$46 | 600 mm and larger slabs; slower cutting, cleaner look. |
| Natural flagstone, dry-laid | $40–$56 | Fitted by hand on a gravel base with stone-dust joints. |
| Natural stone on a concrete slab | $60–$85 | Mortar-set. For pool-free terraces next to the house and formal entries. |
Prices go up with tight access (everything carried in by wheelbarrow), lots of curves and cuts, removal of an old concrete pad, or a slope that needs a wall. They go down a little on simple rectangles over 500 sq ft. Most patios we build land between $9,000 and $28,000.
