Shingles, underlayment and ventilation, explained.

What goes on your roof decides how long it lasts. Here's what we install, why we install it, and what changes the price.

Shingle lines

Three lines, one honest difference each.

We install laminated architectural shingles from the major North American makers. We don't install three-tab shingles: they cost less up front and give out years sooner.

Base price

Standard architectural

Two laminated layers that give the roof depth. The right choice for most Kelowna homes.

  • Wind rating around 130 km/h
  • Limited lifetime manufacturer warranty
  • The widest colour range
About $90 more per square

Impact-rated (Class 4)

A rubber-modified shingle that flexes instead of cracking when hail hits.

  • Our pick for Okanagan hail
  • Some insurers discount for it, so ask yours
  • Slightly fewer colours
About $190 more per square

Designer

Thicker, heavier shingles cut to look like slate or cedar shake, without the upkeep.

  • The deepest shadow lines
  • Heavier, so we check the framing first
  • Longest lead time, about two weeks

Colours we're asked for most

Every maker names these differently. We bring full-size sample boards to the estimate, because a small chip looks nothing like a whole roof in July sun.

  • CharcoalHides dirt, asked for most
  • Weathered woodWarm brown-grey blend
  • DriftwoodLighter, runs cooler in summer
  • Slate greyCool blue-grey
  • Bark brownDeep brown, suits brick
  • Onyx blackCrisp on modern houses
Underlayment and ventilation

What's under the shingles

Cross-section of a shingle roof: deck, ice and water shield at the eave, underlayment, drip edge, shingles and a ridge vent, with air flowing from the soffit to the ridge 123456
Roof deck
The plywood or OSB the roof is built on. Checked board by board, soft sheets replaced.
Ice and water shield
Self-sealing membrane along the eaves and in valleys, where meltwater backs up.
Synthetic underlayment
Covers the rest of the deck. Sheds water if a shingle ever lifts.
Drip edge
Metal along every edge, so water drips into the eavestrough instead of onto the fascia.
Shingles
Nailed to the maker's pattern. Wrong nailing voids the shingle warranty.
Ridge vent and soffits
Air comes in low at the soffits and leaves at the ridge, keeping the attic dry and cool.

Without that airflow, attic heat cooks shingles from below in summer and melts snow into ice dams in winter. We check your soffit intake at every estimate and size the ridge vent to match.
