For nervous drivers

Nervous is normal. We start where nothing can surprise you.

Maybe a first try years ago went badly, or you never needed to drive until now. Either way, lessons begin in an empty parking lot and stay there until you're bored of it.

How every lesson goes

  1. A quiet-lot start

Your first lessons happen in a large, empty lot. No traffic behind you and nobody waiting for you to turn.

  2. Your pace

We'll suggest a side street when we think you're ready. "Not yet" is always a fine answer.

  3. Stop any time

The car has a second brake on the instructor's side, so you're never on your own. Ask to stop and we stop.

  4. Small goals

Each lesson has one small goal, written down at the end, so you can see how far you've come.

Say "pull over, please" and that's exactly what happens.

No sighs and no "just one more corner". We find a safe spot, stop, and wait while you breathe, talk or sit quietly. A lesson with three stops is still a good lesson.

Small goals, one lesson at a time

An example of how the first five lessons often go. Yours may be quicker or slower, and both are fine.

  • Lesson 1Seat, mirrors, and starting and stopping smoothly in the lot.
  • Lesson 2Slow turns, hand-over-hand steering, stopping on a painted line.
  • Lesson 3Parking between the lines and reversing in a straight line.
  • Lesson 4A first loop of quiet side streets, if you want it.
  • Lesson 5Stop signs and right turns with light traffic around you.

What we won't do

  • Take you onto a busy road or the highway without asking you first.
  • Raise our voice, or make a show of using the instructor's brake.
  • Compare you with anyone else, including how quickly other people learn.
  • Push you toward a road test date before you feel ready for it.

Start in the lot, whenever you're ready.

Tell us what makes driving hard for you. We'll call or text to talk it through first, and nothing is booked until you say so.
