Family dentistry, step by step

What each visit involves, how long it takes and a typical fee range. Your exact cost after an exam.

Checkups

$45 to $75 recall exam

What happens

A dentist looks at every tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissue of your mouth, and checks for signs of oral cancer. We take X-rays only when they are due, usually bitewings every one to two years.

Good to know

A first, complete exam for a new patient takes longer and runs $110 to $170, X-rays extra ($40 to $150 depending on the set).

Cleanings

$150 to $260 most adults

What happens

A hygienist removes tartar above and below the gumline, polishes, and measures your gums. If you have sensitive teeth, ask for numbing gel; we are happy to use it.

Good to know

Cleanings are billed in time units, so the fee depends on how much build-up there is. Most adults need two to three units every six months.

Fillings

$160 to $420 by size

What happens

We numb the tooth, remove the decay and fill it with a tooth-coloured composite, shaped and polished to your bite. Most fillings take 30 to 60 minutes.

Good to know

Small cavities caught early are the cheapest work we do. Your lip may stay numb for two to three hours, so plan a soft lunch.

Crowns

$1,100 to $1,600 per tooth

What happens

For a cracked or heavily filled tooth. At the first visit we shape the tooth, take a scan and fit a temporary crown. About two weeks later we fit the permanent porcelain crown.

Good to know

We send your insurer a pre-estimate before we start, so you know your share in writing.

Root canals on front teeth

$650 to $950 front tooth

What happens

When the nerve inside a front tooth is infected or damaged, we clean out the canal, disinfect it and seal it, usually in one or two visits, under local anaesthetic.

Good to know

We treat front teeth here. Molars, which have several curved canals, we refer to an endodontist so you get the right tools for the job.

Night guards and sports guards

$150 to $700

What happens

We take a quick scan or impression and have the guard made to fit your teeth. Night guards ($450 to $700) protect teeth from grinding; sports guards ($150 to $250) are thinner and come in team colours.

Good to know

Many insurance plans cover a night guard once every few years. Kids' sports guards may need replacing as their teeth change.

Not done here: braces and wisdom teeth

Braces are for an orthodontist and wisdom-tooth surgery is for an oral surgeon. We'll tell you plainly when it's time, write the referral and send your records ahead.
