How it works

How a term works

Four things happen every term, for every student: a placement, one steady tutor, a monthly check-in with you, and a written note at the end.

  1. The placement assessment

About 45 minutes at the centre, free. Your child works through a short task in the subject you asked about, a few questions below grade and a few above, with a tutor beside them. Then we sit down with you for ten minutes and go over what we saw.

Free · weekday afternoons or Saturday
  2. One group and one tutor, all term

We place your child in a group of up to six at their level, on the day you picked. The same tutor teaches that group every week until the term ends, so nobody has to start over explaining where they get stuck.

Same tutor, same time, every week
  3. A check-in with you every month

Once a month the tutor sets aside ten minutes for you, at pickup or by phone, whichever suits you. You hear what the group is working on, how your child is handling it, and one thing worth practising at home.

    10 minutes, monthly
  4. A written progress note at the end of term

A one-page note from the tutor: what your child can now do, what still needs work, and which group we suggest for next term. It comes home with a few pages of their own work from the term.

    One page, in writing

The progress note

Specific enough to act on

No letter grades, no stickers, no "doing great!". The note says exactly what changed, so you can hold it up next to the school report card and see what the term did.

This is the shape of one, for a grade 5 student in a math group.

End-of-term progress note

Math · Grades 4 to 6 · Tuesday 5:30 pm group · Tutor: Priya

Can now do
Multiplies two-digit numbers without a times table, and checks answers by estimating first.
Still working on
Comparing fractions with different denominators. Guesses when the pieces aren't drawn.
Next term
Stay in the Tuesday group. We start decimals in February.
At home
Ten minutes of fraction pairs, twice a week. Ask which is bigger, and why.

Who you'll see

A small team, the same faces every week

Tutors keep their groups for the whole term, and for the whole year where the timetable allows. High school groups are taught by tutors with a university degree in the subject.
