After-school and Saturday classes · Markham

Math, reading and writing, taught in groups of six.

A neighbourhood tutoring centre for grades 1 to 12. Every class follows the Ontario curriculum, every group is sorted by grade and a short placement task, and every student keeps the same tutor all term.

Who comes to us

For kids who need a steadier footing, and kids ready for more.

Most of our students are doing fine at school but losing ground in one subject: fractions that never quite clicked, reading that feels slow and tiring, or essays that stall after the first paragraph. Others are already strong and want work that stretches them.

  • Grades 1 to 3
Phonics, number sense and neat, complete sentences.
  • Grades 4 to 6
Multiplication, fractions, chapter books and real paragraphs.
  • Grades 7 and 8
Getting ready for grade 9 math and longer essays.
  • Grades 9 to 12
Functions, exam review, the OSSLT and analytical essays.

We don't teach French or science, and we don't run drop-in homework help. What we don't do, and why

Three subjects

One subject per class, taught from the ground up.

Math

From counting and place value to functions and calculus prep. We fill the gaps underneath the current unit first, then keep pace with what is being taught at school.

Reading

Decoding and fluency for younger readers. For older ones: reading closely, finding the main idea and backing up an answer with words from the text.

Writing

Sentences, then paragraphs, then essays. Students draft, get feedback written right on the page, and rewrite, which is how good writing actually gets made.

Group size

Six chairs at the table. Never a seventh.

Six is small enough for the tutor to see every page of work in a class, and big enough for students to hear how someone else thinks a problem through. When a time slot fills up, we open a second group with its own tutor instead of squeezing in one more chair.

Before the first class

A free placement assessment, so the group fits.

The grade on a report card tells us where to start looking, not where your child actually is. So before anyone joins a group, they spend about 45 minutes with a tutor on a short task in the subject you asked about.

  1. A short task around their grade. A few questions a little below it, a few a little above. No score sheet goes home.
  2. A ten-minute talk with you. What we saw, where they are solid and where they get stuck.
  3. A group suggestion. The level, the day and the tutor we would place them with. You decide from there.
