Missed classes and make-ups
What if my child misses a class?
Call or text us before the class if you can. You can book one make-up class a month in another group of the same subject and grade band, as long as it has a free seat. Make-ups don't carry over into the next month.
Do you refund missed classes?
No. The monthly fee holds your child's seat in the group, so it stays the same when a class is missed. That is what the make-up class is for.
What happens on a snow day?
If we close for weather, we text and email every family by 2 pm, and the class is made up on a Saturday in the same month.
Can we change days partway through a term?
Yes, if a group at the same level has room on the day you want. Your child may have a different tutor for the rest of the term, and we pass their notes along.
Can we take a month off?
Tell us by the 20th of the month before. We hold the seat for one month with no fee. After that, the seat goes to the next family waiting.
What to bring
What should my child bring to class?
Pencils, an eraser and their school agenda. From grade 7 up, a calculator for math. We hand out the workbooks and reading books, and a water bottle is a good idea.
What should we bring to the placement assessment?
A recent report card if you have one, and a piece of school work that has been a struggle, like a test or an unfinished essay. There is nothing to prepare at home.
Can parents wait at the centre?
Yes, there is a small waiting area with seats by the front desk. Students in grades 1 to 3 are picked up at the classroom door by a parent or caregiver.
Is there homework?
A short practice sheet each week, about 15 minutes. It keeps the lesson fresh; it is not meant to fill an evening.
What we don't teach, and when we refer out
Do you teach French or science?
No. We teach math, reading and writing, in English. If you need French or science help, ask at the front desk and we will tell you where families have found it.
Can my child come in just for homework help?
No, we don't run drop-in homework help. Each group follows a plan for the term, and students work on that plan rather than on whatever is due tomorrow. Tutors will gladly help with a homework question that fits the lesson.
Do you offer one-to-one tutoring?
No. Every class is a small group of up to six, sorted by grade and placement level. We think the group is part of what works.
What if I think my child has a learning disability?
Please start with your child's school: ask the teacher or principal about an assessment, or see a registered psychologist for a psychoeducational assessment. We don't assess or diagnose learning disabilities, and tutoring is not a substitute for that. If a tutor notices signs during the term, we will tell you plainly and suggest the same. Your child is still welcome in class while you look into it.
