The gym

The gym

About 6,000 square feet of concrete floor in an old Strathcona warehouse. Six-metre ceilings, a roll-up door that opens all summer, and nothing on the floor that doesn't help you get stronger.

Equipment

What's on the floor.

Everything is in kilograms, everything is labelled, and every bar is a proper bar. If something breaks, it gets a red tag and comes off the floor that day.

House rules

Six rules. No exceptions.

A short list. The coaches will remind you, nicely, the first time.

  • Chalk: yes

Use as much as you need. Keep it over the bowl and brush the bar when you're done.

  • Re-rack everything

Every plate, every bar, every time. Plates go back on the tree by size, heaviest at the bottom.

  • Collars on

Every loaded bar gets collars. Plates sliding off mid-set is how people get hurt.

  • Drop on platforms

Bumpers only, on platforms only. Steel plates and racks are no-drop zones.

  • Ask for a spot

Going heavy on bench or squat? Get a spot or set the safeties. Any coach will spot you.

  • Wipe it down

Benches and handles get a wipe after you use them. Spray and towels are at every rack.
