A wood house among tall trees with a long raised deck and railing along its upper floor

Outdoor living

Made for July.

Decks, covered patios and outdoor kitchens that you still want to sit on at four in the afternoon in the middle of summer.

What we build outside

Ranges are 2026 Kelowna-area prices with labour, before GST. Height, stairs and how the structure ties into the house move them most.

Ask about your yard

Decks

$55–$125/sq ft

Ground-level and raised decks, stairs, railings and privacy screens. Raised decks on slopes get engineered footings and posts, and we pull the permit where one is required.

Covered patios

$30,000–$85,000

A real roof tied into the house, timber or steel posts, a ceiling with lighting and a fan, and gutters that send the water away from your foundation.

Outdoor kitchens

$18,000–$65,000

A built-in grill, counters, a sink and storage, with the gas line run by a licensed gas fitter and power for a fridge and lights.

Decking materials, compared

The question we hear most is which surface stays comfortable barefoot. Here is how they compare in a Kelowna summer.

Decking materials by installed cost, heat, upkeep and lifespan
MaterialInstalled, per sq ftUnderfoot in July sunUpkeepExpected life
Pressure-treated wood$55–$70Warm, but walkableStain every 2–3 years15–20 years
Western red cedar$70–$90The coolest of the lotOil every 1–2 years20–25 years
Capped composite$85–$115Light colours warm, dark colours hotWash it25–30 years
PVC decking$95–$125Cooler than composite, still warmWash it30+ years
Vinyl membrane over plywood$70–$95Warm; pick a light colourClean, check seams yearly15–25 years

Vinyl membrane is the choice when the deck is a roof over living space, because it keeps the room below dry.

Shade comes first.

A beautiful deck in full west sun sits empty all August. Before materials, we sort out where the shade will be.

Read the sunWe check where the afternoon sun lands on your lot in July, not just where the view is.
Roof or pergolaA solid roof for full shade and rain, slats for filtered light and less heat build-up.
Air that movesA ceiling fan under a covered patio is the cheapest cooling you will ever buy.
Plan the servicesGas, power and lighting run in before the decking goes down, not after.
