Give us a few hours. We'll give you a crew.

Nobody needs experience. You'll work beside regulars who know where everything goes, and you can start with a single shift to see if it suits you.

The shifts

Five kinds of work, pick one or try them all.

Sorting

Open donation boxes, check dates, and sort cans, dry goods and produce onto the back shelves. Good for a quiet morning and a podcast.

When
Mon, Wed and Fri, 10 am–1 pm or 1–4 pm
Takes
3 hours

Shop floor

Greet people at the door, keep shelves stocked, help at checkout. The most social shift we have, and the one that needs the most hands.

When
Tue 12:30–6:30 pm, Sat 9:30 am–2:30 pm (half shifts welcome)
Takes
2½–5 hours

Kitchen

Chop, stir, serve and wash up for the Thursday supper. A food handler certificate helps, but our kitchen lead can teach you on the job.

When
Thursdays, 2:30–7:30 pm
Takes
5 hours, or 3 for serving only

Garden

Weed, water, build compost and help new plot holders get started. Bring a hat. In winter the garden crew moves indoors to start seedlings.

When
Saturday work bee, 10 am–noon, May to October
Takes
2 hours

Driver

Take grocery orders to neighbours who can't leave home, and pick up from local bakeries and grocers. You'll need your own car, a clean licence and a police check, which we pay for.

When
Wednesday afternoons, plus pickups as needed
Takes
2–3 hours

Your first shift

What to expect when you walk in.

  • Our volunteer coordinator meets you, shows you the hall and pairs you with a regular for the whole shift.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get a little dusty. Aprons and gloves are by the kitchen door.
  • There's tea, coffee and a snack shelf in the back room. Take a break whenever you need one.
  • Students can count hours toward the 40 required for an Ontario high school diploma. Ask us to sign your form.

This form sends your details to our volunteer coordinator. She reads every one and gets back to you by phone or email, usually within a week, to find your first shift.
