Help a kid get outside

Three ways to help, from two hours a month in the gear room to leading a trip. Pick the one that fits your life.

The roles

Marked like a trail

From the easiest to start to the one that takes the most training.

Easiest start

Gear sorter

Sort returns, check zippers and buckles, match boots into pairs and pack bags for families who asked for gear. Good with a friend, or with a teen of your own.

Time it takes2 hours, once or twice a month, on a Tuesday or Thursday evening or a Saturday morning

More involved

Driver

Drive youth from the gear room to the trailhead or the lake and back, in our van or your own vehicle. You'll need a full licence and a clean driver's abstract.

Time it takesAn afternoon or a Saturday, as often as you like. We send the schedule a month ahead.

Most training

Trip leader

Lead hikes, paddling days, winter Saturdays and overnights alongside another leader. You don't need to be an expert. You need to like teenagers and stay steady when plans change.

Time it takesTraining over two weekends, then about two outings a month for at least one season

Before your first outing

What happens after you sign up

  • A coffee and a chatTwenty minutes at the gear room or on the phone, about you and the role.
  • A vulnerable sector checkEvery adult who spends time with youth gets one from the local police service. We help with the form and cover the fee.
  • Two referencesPeople who know you well, not family.
  • TrainingLeaders train with us over two weekends. Drivers and sorters get a one-hour walkthrough.
  • One outing as an extra adultYou come along once before you take on a role, to see how a day runs.
