Programs

Four ways outside, all year

Every program runs with at least two trained leaders and costs a small fee that a bursary can cover in full.

  • Hikers with backpacks walking in single file along a narrow trail beside a rock face

    After-school hikes

Two hours on the trails in and around town, straight from school. We walk, stop to look at things, learn to read a map and a trail marker, and get back before supper.

    Ages
    11 to 17
    When
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:45 to 6:00 pm. Fall: Sept 15 to Nov 19. Spring: Apr 13 to Jun 17.
    Fee
$10 an outing, or $80 for a whole season
    Meet
The gear room, 120 Larchwood Street. Pickup there at 6:00 pm.
    Bring
    • Running shoes or boots (we lend boots)
    • A water bottle and a snack
    • A warm layer for when it cools off
  • Two people paddling a yellow canoe across a still lake under big clouds

    Summer paddling days

Full days in canoes on sheltered inland lakes within an hour of town. The first morning starts on the beach: getting in without tipping, steering, and what to do if you tip anyway. By August, crossing a bay with a partner feels normal.

    Ages
    12 to 17
    When
Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, Jul 7 to Aug 28
    Fee
$20 a day. Canoes, paddles and life jackets included.
    Swim check
A short, relaxed check in shallow water on the first morning. It tells us where to put you in the group, not whether you can come.
    Bring
    • Clothes that can get wet (no jeans)
    • A hat and sunscreen
    • A packed lunch and two water bottles
    • Dry clothes for the ride home
  • A group snowshoeing in single file across open snow below snow-covered spruce

    Winter skills Saturdays

A different skill every Saturday: snowshoeing, lighting and putting out a fire safely, building a wind shelter, layering so you stay warm, and making a hot drink on a camp stove. It's the training for the winter overnight.

    Ages
    11 to 17
    When
Saturdays, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Jan 9 to Mar 27
    Fee
    $15 a Saturday
    Cold days
Below −28 °C with the wind chill, we stay in and run the session at the gear room.
    Bring
    • Warm layers, with no cotton next to the skin
    • A thermos if you have one (we have spares)
    • Lunch. We lend parkas, snow pants, boots, mitts and snowshoes.
  • A small orange and blue tent pitched among pines above a lake

    Seasonal overnights

One weekend each season, we camp. Youth help plan the menu, pitch the tents, cook supper and wash up. In winter we sleep in a heated canvas wall tent, so it's a cold adventure without a cold night.

A Tuesday hike, start to finish

From the bell to pickup

  1. Meet at the gear room. Sign in with a leader and swap into boots if you need them.
  2. Vans leave. No trailhead we use is more than 20 minutes away.
  3. On the trail. About 5 km, at a pace the whole group can keep.
  4. Back at the vans for a head count.
  5. Pickup at the gear room. A leader stays until the last youth has gone home.
