How it works
Five steps, and the first one happens in your house
No quote over the phone from square footage. We come and look, do the maths, show you the maths, and only then talk about equipment.
The home assessment
We walk every room with you, look at the attic, the basement, the ducts and the electrical panel, and ask how the house feels in January.
- Which rooms run cold or hot
- What you heat with now and what it costs you
- Where an outdoor unit can sit clear of snow and the drip line
The heat-loss calculation
We work out how much heat each room loses on Halifax's coldest design day. That number, not the size of the house, decides how big the system should be. You get the report.
The quote
Equipment, model numbers, where everything goes, what the electrician does, and a fixed price. When there is a real choice, such as one head or two, we price both and say which we would pick.
- No pressure and no expiry tricks
- We point you to the current rebate program to check yourself
Install day
Two installers and a licensed electrician. We lay floor covers, mount the outdoor unit on a stand above the snow line, run and seal the lines, test, and tidy up. Before we leave, we show you the controls and the settings we recommend.
The first-winter check
We come back in the first real cold snap to check it is doing what the calculation said it would, adjust settings, and look at the outdoor unit's defrost and drainage.
What the heat-loss calculation looks at
This is the part a rule of thumb skips. Each of these can move the right size of system up or down by a full step.
- Walls and attic
- How much insulation is there, and how much of each wall is window or door.
- Windows
- Single, double or triple glazed, how big, and which way they face.
- Air leakage
- Older Halifax houses can lose as much heat through drafts as through walls. We look for the obvious leaks and tell you about them.
- Basement
- Finished or not, heated or not, and how much of it sits above ground.
- How you live
- Rooms you close off, a wood stove you love, someone home all day. These change where the heat needs to go.
Why we come back
A heat pump earns its keep in its first cold snap
Fall installs look perfect at 8 °C. The real test is a week of -12 °C with wind off the harbour. That is when we want to see the system, not two years later on a service call.
If the house isn't holding temperature where the calculation said it would, we find out why and put it right.
