Pest control for farms, acreages and back roads.

One person, one truck. Mice and rats in barns and farmhouses, wasp and hornet nests, carpenter ants and cluster flies. The prices are on this page, and you talk to the person who does the work.

Mice and rats in barns, sheds and farmhouses

If a building has grain, hay or a warm wall, it has mice. The trick is not the trap. It is finding the gap they use, so the next ones do not walk in the same door.

I start outside, walking the foundation, door sweeps, pipe holes and the sill where the siding meets the concrete. Then I set traps and locked bait where kids, pets and livestock cannot reach, and seal what I can. Bigger repairs are carpentry, and I will tell you exactly what to ask a carpenter for.

  • Feed roomsGrain bins, bags and the corner behind them. This is where it starts.
  • Hay loftsNesting in the bales, travelling the beams, dropping into the stalls.
  • Farmhouse wallsNoise in the ceiling at night, droppings in a kitchen drawer.
  • Shops and shedsWiring chewed, seat stuffing gone from the tractor.

Wasps and hornets, carpenter ants, cluster flies

Busiest July to September

Wasps and hornets

Nests in the eaves, under the porch, in the soil by the fence post, behind the barn siding. If someone is getting stung at the back door or the hay wagon, call and say so. Those jobs go to the front of the line.

I treat the nest and knock it down, and I go back to look at it if you want me to.

Spring and early summer

Carpenter ants

Big black ants indoors in spring, or small piles of shavings below a wall or window frame. They nest in damp wood, so I look for the wet that let them in and treat the nest, not just the ants you can see.

Fall into winter

Cluster flies

Slow, sleepy flies at the upstairs windows, waking on the first warm days of winter. They overwinter in attics and wall voids, so that is where I treat, ideally in late summer before they come in.

Example barn bait station plan Floor plan of a barn with stalls along the north and south walls, a centre aisle, and a feed room at the east end. Ten numbered bait stations sit along the walls, at the stall ends, and at the doors. AISLE FEED AND HAY ROOM 1234 5678 910
An example plan for a ten-stall barn. Yours is drawn after a walk-through.

Bait station plans for barns

A barn has feed in it, so it is never mouse-free for long. A barn gets a plan, not a one-off visit.

Stations
Locked boxes, fixed to walls and posts at the doors, in the feed room and down the aisle where the mice run.
Checks
Every two weeks in fall and winter, monthly the rest of the year, on a day we agree. Dead mice are removed each time.
Records
A station map and a log of what I found, left in the feed room or emailed to you, your choice.
Price
From $65 a month for a small barn. A walk-through sets the number, and you get it before I set a thing.

Price board

Price boardCanadian dollars, plus GST
  • Wasp nest

Per nest, from ground level up to a second-storey eave. Higher up, or inside a wall: call and describe it.

    $129

  • Cluster flies

House or shop. Attic and wall voids treated where they overwinter.

    $179

  • Carpenter ants

I find the nest, treat it, and show you the damp wood they are in. A big colony may need a second visit, and I say so first.

    $199

  • Mice in a house

Entry points found and sealed where I can, traps set, and one return visit to collect them and check.

    $219

  • Barn bait stations

Small barns, up to six stations, checked on a set schedule. Bigger barns priced after a walk-through.

    from$65a month

The price you are quoted is the price you pay. If a job turns out bigger than it looked, I stop and phone you before I carry on. Bed bugs, wildlife and food plant contracts are not on the board: see the questions below.

How a visit goes

No pushy quote, no surprise at the end. Here is the whole road from phone call to done.

  1. You call or send the form

Tell me what you have seen and where. A photo texted to the same number helps. I phone back the same working day.

  2. I come out

Usually within two working days. Wasps by a door and livestock barns go first. I park on the lane and walk in if the yard is soft.

  3. I look, then I quote

I walk the building and work out how they are getting in. You hear the price before I start, and it is the number on the board unless the job is clearly bigger.

  4. I treat and tell you what to watch

You get a short note in plain words: what I did, what to leave alone, and when to call me back. That is it.

Straight answers before you call

Is it safe for my animals?

Bait only goes in locked stations, fixed where dogs, cats, horses and cattle cannot get at it. In a barn with a nosy goat or a loose farm dog, I use traps instead. Tell me what lives there before I come.

I leave the product name and label with you. If an animal gets into anything it should not have, call your vet right away and read them that label.

I have kids. What should I do?

Keep them and anything they might touch away from the work area while I am working. Wasp jobs are the strictest: stay inside until I say it is clear. After that I tell you which spots to leave alone and for how long.

How long does it take?

A wasp nest is usually half an hour to forty-five minutes. Cluster flies and carpenter ants run about an hour to an hour and a half. Mice in a house take about an hour, then a short return visit. A barn walk-through and set-up is a couple of hours, and later checks are twenty to forty minutes.

Do you work in the rain?

Indoor and barn work carries on whatever the weather. Wasp nests are best done dry and still, so in heavy rain, thunder or a gusty day I phone you to move it, usually by a day or two. If the lane is too soft for the truck, I walk in.

What do you send to someone else?

Bed bugs, wildlife (raccoons, skunks, squirrels, bats) and contracts for food plants go to bigger companies with the crews and equipment for them. I would rather say so on the phone than take your money and do a poor job, and if I know someone good I will give you the name.
