Velvet & Fern is six chairs, a colour bar and a big window onto Queen Street East. We work mostly in lived-in colour: balayage and foilayage that grow out softly, so you can stretch the time between visits instead of booking every month.
Our curly cuts are done dry, one curl at a time, because curls shrink and spring in their own way and a wet cut can't see that. Straight and wavy hair gets the same care, with precision cuts and blow-outs.
What we don't do: extensions and chemical straightening (keratin, relaxers or Japanese straightening). We would rather send you to someone who does them well every day.

Hand-painted balayage, foilayage for more lift, grey blending that softens the line instead of chasing it, and glosses to refresh tone between visits.
We cut curly and coily hair dry and as you wear it, curl by curl, then wash, define and diffuse, so you leave knowing how to get the shape back at home.
New colour clients start with a free 15-minute consult, in the studio or by video. We look at your hair in daylight, ask what has been on it before (box dye, henna, keratin, last summer's lightener), and tell you what is possible in one visit and what will take two.
Patch test, 48 hours ahead. If you're new to us, or it's been more than six months since your last colour here, we do a small patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment. It takes five minutes at the front desk.
Every stylist here does colour and cuts. The difference is years behind the chair and what they take on, and it shows in the price.
Two to six years on the floor. A great match for cuts, blow-outs, glosses, root touch-ups and a first balayage.
Seven years or more. Takes on colour corrections, big changes and the trickiest curls, and trains our Stylists.
