One-on-one lessons

Learn to drive St. John's, hills and all.

One instructor, one dual-brake car, your pace. I pick you up at home, school or work, and we start wherever you feel steady, even an empty car park.

  • One-on-one, never a group
  • Automatic car, second brake on my side
  • Pick-up at home, school or work

The instructor and the car

One instructor. One car. No rush.

I'm Darlene, and I teach every lesson myself. There is no rotation of instructors and no second car, so by your third lesson you know where my brake pedal is, how I give directions and what I'll say when a hill gets steep.

St. John's is not an easy place to learn. The streets climb, the downtown corners are tight, the roundabouts keep coming and the snow arrives early. I teach on those roads because they are the ones you will be driving.

I only teach in an automatic. No classroom courses, no manual transmission, no motorcycle or commercial licences. Those go to bigger schools, and I'll tell you so up front.

Lessons

Four kinds of lesson, one calm voice.

Every lesson is one-on-one, 60 or 90 minutes, and it starts where you are, not where a syllabus says you should be.

Never driven

Beginner

We start in an empty car park: seat, mirrors, pedals, steering. Then quiet streets, then the first small hill, but only when you say you're ready.

  • Smooth starts and stops
  • Turns, lane changes and yielding
  • Your first roundabout, at your speed

Licensed, but rusty

Refresher

A licence from another country, years away from the wheel, or a car you never felt sure in. We find what's shaky and work on only that.

  • Roundabouts and merging
  • Downtown one-ways and parallel parking
  • Highway on-ramps and passing

Before your road test

Road test practice

We drill what the examiner watches for: shoulder checks, full stops, hill starts, parallel parking and three-point turns. A mock test ends with plain feedback.

  • A mock test, start to finish
  • The tricky bits, repeated until dull
  • My car for test day, if you want it

Snow, ice and hills

Winter driving

Braking on a glazed hill, rocking out of a snowbank, leaving room on a slick road. A quiet lot first, then real streets when conditions allow.

  • Skid control, in a safe lot
  • Hill starts on snow
  • Clearing the car and checking tires

Questions

What people ask first.

Not covered here? Text (555) 555-0135 and ask.

Do you teach manual transmission?

No. I have one automatic car and that is all I teach. If you need a manual licence, a bigger school is the better choice.

Do I need a learner's licence first?

For lessons on the road, yes, and bring it each time. Not sure where you stand? Ask before you book and I'll tell you what to sort out first.

Where do we meet?

At your door, your school or your workplace anywhere in St. John's. Tell me which entrance. Drop-off can be somewhere else.

Can I use your car for my road test?

Yes. The road test car is a set price: a warm-up lesson, the drive to the test centre and the car for your test. You book the test yourself with the licensing office.

What happens when it snows?

If the roads aren't safe, I call you that morning and we move the lesson at no charge. If you'd rather not drive in it at all, we can swap to a car park lesson.

I'm really nervous. Is that a problem?

It's the most common thing I hear. The second brake is on my side, we go as slowly as you like, and we stop whenever you ask.

What if I need to cancel?

Tell me 24 hours before and it costs nothing. Later than that, I charge half the lesson.

How do I pay?

E-transfer, debit or cash after each lesson. A bundle is paid at the first lesson.

Tell me where to pick you up.

Say what you'd like to work on and when suits you. I read every request myself and text or call you back, usually the same working day.
