Recent rooms, after dark

Four jobs from the last two years, described by what we changed and why. Homes are not named.

A kitchen with oak cabinets, a white stone island and copper bar stools

Kitchen · Fairfield

An island that works at night

The owners cooked in the shadow of their own heads: one bright fixture behind them, nothing over the counters. The renovation moved the sink to a new island, so we started there.

  • Three pendants over the island on their own dimmer
  • Warm under-cabinet LED on every upper run
  • Recessed lights moved to the front edge of the counters
  • Two new 20-amp counter circuits and island outlets

Light at face height

A downlight right above the mirror left the owners squinting at shadows. We moved the light to the sides of the mirror at face height, added a soft night light under the vanity, and wired the new in-floor heat and a fan on a humidity switch.

Four days of electrical, fitted between the plumber and the tile setter.

Heritage rewire · Fernwood

A 1912 house, rewired from the attic down

Most of the original knob-and-tube was still live, fed from a 60-amp fuse panel. The owners wanted it gone without losing the original plaster in the front rooms.

We fed new circuits from the attic and the basement, ran them behind baseboards and inside closets, and opened just a handful of small patches in the two front rooms. The new 200-amp panel sits where the old one did.

Garden and exterior · Gordon Head

A path you can find in November

The front walk wound through a dark garden to a single porch light. We planned it on a wet evening walk-through and kept it low and warm.

  • Low-voltage path lights along the walk
  • Two uplights in the big cedar
  • Step lights on the porch stairs
  • Everything on a photocell timer
