Pests we treat

Know the signs. Then let us take a look.

Five pests make up almost all of our work. Here is what each one leaves behind, what we do about it and how many visits it usually takes.

Signs to look for
  • Lines of ants along baseboards, counters or the edge of the sink
  • Small piles of sawdust under a window or in the basement: carpenter ants
  • Winged ants indoors each spring
  • Ants coming back to the same spot after you wipe them up

What the treatment is

We follow the trail back to where they're coming in, then place slow-acting gel bait along it so the workers carry it home to the colony. Outside, we treat the foundation and the gaps where the trail starts.

Carpenter ants get a closer look: we find the nest in damp wood and treat it directly.

1visit, then a check-in call after two weeks. Carpenter ants can need a second visit.

Mice and rats

From $289

Signs to look for
  • Droppings like grains of rice in drawers or behind the stove
  • Chewed food packages in the pantry
  • Scratching in the walls or ceiling at night
  • Dark grease marks along baseboards
  • Shredded paper or insulation tucked in a corner

What the treatment is

We go from the foundation to the attic looking for the gaps they use: a mouse fits through a hole the size of a dime. We seal them with steel wool, copper mesh and sealant, then set traps and locked bait stations where kids and pets can't reach them.

Sealing is part of the price. It's the part that keeps them out.

2–3visits over two to three weeks to check traps and stations and remove what we catch.

Wasps and hornets

From $149
Wasps on a small papery nest built under a roof overhang
Signs to look for
  • Wasps flying steadily in and out of one gap in siding or a soffit
  • A grey, papery nest under the eaves, a deck or a shed roof
  • Wasps indoors near one window, which can mean a nest in the wall

What the treatment is

We treat the nest at its entrance, early in the morning or toward evening when the wasps are home and slow. Nests we can reach safely are taken down. Nests above the second storey need a longer ladder, which changes the price.

1visit for most nests. The nest is quiet by the next day.

Seeing fuzzy, golden bees around a hollow tree or a wall? Those may be honeybees. We don't treat them; a local beekeeper can often move them.

Bed bugs

From $450
Signs to look for
  • Itchy bites in a line or cluster, noticed in the morning
  • Small rusty or dark spots on sheets and mattress seams
  • Tiny shed shells and pale eggs in seams and bed frame joints
  • A sweet, musty smell in a room with a lot of them

What the treatment is

We confirm them first: a few bites aren't proof. Then we steam mattress seams and furniture, treat cracks, bed frames and baseboards, and fit encasements on the mattress and box spring if you want them.

Getting the room ready matters as much as the treatment. Our prep checklist walks you through it.

2treatments 14 days apart, then an inspection to make sure they're gone.

Cockroaches

From $249
Signs to look for
  • Roaches running for cover when you switch on a light
  • Droppings like ground pepper in cupboard hinges and drawer corners
  • Small brown egg cases behind the fridge or stove
  • An oily, musty smell in a kitchen with many of them

What the treatment is

In homes and kitchens we mostly see German cockroaches. We put gel bait where they hide (hinges, under appliances, behind the dishwasher) and add a growth regulator so the young can't breed. No fogging, so you don't need to empty every cupboard.

In apartment buildings it works best when the units around yours are treated too. We can talk to your landlord.

2–3visits about two weeks apart, until the monitors stay clear.

Not sure which one it is? Tell us what you've seen and where.
